A nerve agent was used to deliberately poison and murder a Russian spy and his daughter, police have now confirmed.

Sergei and Yulia Skripal continue to fight for their lives after they were 'targeted' with a deadly substance in the middle of Salisbury town centre in Wiltshire.

It is also been revealed that a police officer who was the first on the scene and found the pair slumped on a bench is also in a 'very serious' condition.

Speaking outside Scotland Yard, head of counter terrorism Mark Rowley would not confirm what substance was used to try and kill Russian double agent Mr Skripal, 66.

'This is being treated as a major incident involving attempted murder, by administration of a nerve agent,' he said.
