ABC News Online: Maldives election: President Abdulla Yameen concedes defeat to opposition candidate

The Maldives' strongman President Abdulla Yameen has conceded he lost Sunday's election to his challenger.

Mr Yameen said at a news conference televised live from the capital, Male: "I know I have to step down now".

The Maldives Election Commission released provisional results earlier on Monday showing longtime politician Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had won, with 58.3 per cent of the vote.
