India’s state-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is advancing five new ‘mission mode projects’ for the Indian Army (IA) and Indian Navy (IN) worth an estimated Rs. 196.93 billion (USD 3.03 billion).

Responding to a parliamentary question on 7 March, India’s Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed that the DRDO is working on two such development projects for the IA: a guided rocket for the Pinaka multiple rocket launcher, and a medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, with completion of these programmes scheduled for February 2020 and March 2023, respectively.

The three remaining projects involve the IN and include the development of long-range SAM systems for the indigenous aircraft carrier presently being built at Cochin Shipyard Limited; a submarine-launched cruise missile; and a 'Marinised Engineered Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) Energy Module' for indigenous submarines.
