Function attended by Gadkari; two more vessels in pipeline
Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) began the block erection of two vessels for the Andaman and Nicobar Administration on Saturday at a function attended by Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways.
The block erection ceremony is one of the important milestones in the construction process of a ship, said a CSL release. These are the first two ships being built for the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, each with a capacity of 500 passengers and 150 tonnes of cargo.
Part of ‘Make in India’ Initiative
Also in the pipeline are two vessels with a capacity of 1,200 passengers and 1,000 tonnes of cargo. The contracts were awarded as part of ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Centre.
Madhu S. Nair, Chairman and Managing Director, CSL. delivered the welcome address. Mr. Gadkari addressed the gathering.
Directors of CSL, representatives from the administration, Shipping Corporation of India, Indian Register of Shipping, American Bureau of Shipping, officers, supervisors and workmen of CSL attended the function.
