DW: EU leaders meet as divisions cloud asylum and migration talks

Some EU leaders are attending a mini-summit in Brussels. They'll discuss differing approaches to how the bloc can deal with a sustained stream of migrants and refugees seeking a new life in Europe.

The leaders of 16 EU member states gathered in Brussels on Sunday for an "informal working meeting" hastily arranged amid a crackdown on NGO rescue ships operating in the Mediterranean Sea. It is taking place ahead of a critical EU summit on Thursday and Friday.

Recent disputes, mainly in Germany and Italy, have exposed divisions on migration and asylum policy — which the EU has been trying to overhaul since the 2015 migrant crisis — between EU member states.

WNU Editor: As I had mentioned in a post yesterday, this summit is to save Merkel's coalition and her job. But I do not see many EU states backing her, and I am sure that her coalition partners .... facing regional elections this fall that would surely hurt them if this continues .... are looking for a way to ditch her. On a side note. Thanks to German Chancellor's open border policy, more evidence  today that she is fueling the rise of the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party to its highest ratings ....
