From Bikes To Almonds: India Set To Hike Customs Duty On 30 US Products

The United States might be engaged in a "trade war" with its biggest trading partner China, and also with the European Union after Donald Trump decided to increase tariffs of certain goods, which were met with counter measures by the other sides.

Now a similar showdown is likely to take place between New Delhi and Washington after India raised duties on 30 products originating in the US, including motorcycles with engine capacity over 800 cc, fresh apples and almonds.

India announced the step on Saturday as a retaliatory measure to the US move which imposed higher duties on Indian steel and aluminium exports, an official said.

Motor cycles with engine capacity over 800 cc is going to attract 50% of duty, almonds 20%, walnuts 20% and apples 25%. “This is the first time that India has levied retaliatory tariffs on any country,” said the official.
