Korean Shipbuilder Starts Construction of PHL’s 2nd Frigate

Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) today conducted the ceremonial first steel-cutting for Philippine Navy’s second of two ordered frigates.

“The First Steel Cutting Ceremony for Hull P160 (Philippine Navy’s second frigate) did happen at 1100H Korea time, with the presence of Philippine Navy officers assigned to HHI to monitor the shipbuilding works,” MaxDefense Philippines said.

“The ceremony officially marks the start of construction work of the 2nd future frigate of the Philippine Navy, which is scheduled for delivery by 2021,” it added.

The same ceremony was held for the first frigate five months ago.

Delivery of first frigate is expected second half of 2020. Delivery of second frigate is expected first half of 2021.

The PHP18-billion worth contract for two frigates was signed on October 24, 2016.
