Unable to put on a show of military might today due to surging coronavirus infections, Russia indulged in a series of spectacular fireworks displays over the capital as night fell.
Celebrations in the former Soviet Union were expected to be grand this year owing to it being the 75th anniversary of Nazi Germany in Europe, but coronavirus concerns scaled back the festivities.
Moscow called off its Victory Day after Russia became the fifth hardest-hit country with nearly 200,000 confirmed infections and a rapidly rising caseload - more than 10,000 confirmed each day this week.
Elsewhere in the former bloc, Ukraine also scaled back its Victory Day - with workers deployed to disinfect the quiet war memorials where veterans clad in face masks laid wreaths to honour the men they fought with.
