Top U.S. General Says China's Hypersonic Missile Test "Very Close" To A "Sputnik Moment"

 

Daily Mail: Joint Chiefs head Gen. Milley says China's 'hypersonic weapons test of orbital nukes' is 'very concerning' and 'comes close to a Sputnik moment': 'It has all of our attention' 

* Gen. Mark Milley, the US' top military officer, acknowledged Beijing's alleged testing of hypersonic weapons capable of carrying nuclear warheads 

* Such weapons would be able to bypass America's missile defense system 

* 'It is very concerning,' Milley said as he described it as a near Sputnik moment 

* Intelligence sources said the weapons were tested over the summer, but Beijing has claimed it was launching a reusable space vehicle 

* Milley warned that the US needs to ramp up its own development of hypersonic, AI and robotic weapons to compete with China 

The United States' top military officer called China's suspected testing of hypersonic weapons 'very concerning' and described it as 'very close' to a 'Sputnik moment' as tensions continue to escalate between the two nations. 

'What we saw was a very significant event of a test of a hypersonic weapon system. And it is very concerning,' Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told The David Rubenstein Show on Bloomberg Television. 

 'I don't know if it's quite a Sputnik moment, but I think it's very close to that,' he added, referencing when the Soviet Union beat America to space in 1957 with the its Sputnik satellite. 'It has all of our attention.'
