Ukraine's defense forces have redefined modern naval warfare in a world-first combat achievement. On May 3, 2025, the official website of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (HUR) reported that a Russian Su-30 Flanker multirole fighter was destroyed over the Black Sea by an air-to-air missile launched from an unmanned surface vessel (USV)—the first confirmed instance of a manned aircraft being downed by a naval drone.
